When the first episode of "SpongeBob SquarePants" aired on Nickelodeon in the USA on May 1st 1999, no one had any idea of the groundbreaking success the series would have.
The characters and storyline were designed by marine biologist Stephen Hillenburg, who is largely to thank for the series' success. Together with his team, he incorporated his own childhood memories into the first 60 episodes of the series, which, in sworn fan circles, are considered the only true, original SpongeBob episodes.
The great popularity of the series is mainly based on the lovingly and detailed outlined characters.
