Description Antquarium

In 2003, NASA conducted a Space Shuttle experiment to study the behavior of ants in zero gravity. For this, a method was needed to transport an ant colony into space. The solution was a special gel in which the ants could dig tunnels like in an anthill and from which they could also feed. Additionally, the gel was transparent, allowing perfect observation of the ants.

This gel is now available to the general public: The Antquarium consists of a Plexiglas container filled with the said gel. If you put some ants from nature into the gel, they start digging tunnels, allowing perfect observation. The ants survive about 1-3 months, and when they die, they are transported out of the tunnels by their fellow ants, making them easy to remove. During the entire time, you do not need to feed the ants, as they feed on the gel.

The delivery includes:
Plexiglas container with Antquarium gel (approx. 17cm*14cm*3.5cm)
Small container for collecting ants
Magnifying glass
Stick for removing dead ants.

When the gel is used up, you do not need to buy a new Antquarium - you can simply refill it with the refill gel.

The current version of the Antquarium has 3 LEDs in the base, allowing you to illuminate the ant tunnels. However, since such brightness does not correspond to the natural living conditions in ant nests, you should only turn it on occasionally for short periods to avoid distressing the animals.
